The masjid is the house of Allah. This is how we behave when we visit it.
Allah tells us to wear our best clothes when we go to the masjid.
يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ
yā banī ādama khudhū zīnatakum ʿinda kulli masjid
Source: Al-A'raf 7:31
Take off your shoes and put them neatly on the shoe rack, so the prayer area stays clean.
Step in with your right foot first and say:
اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
allāhumma ftaḥ lī abwāba raḥmatik
Source: Sahih Muslim 713
Before you sit down, pray two rak'ahs to greet the masjid. This is called tahiyyat al-masjid.
تَحِيَّةُ الْمَسْجِدِ
taḥiyyatu l-masjid
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 444, Sahih Muslim 714
Walk calmly and speak softly, so people can pray and read the Qur'an. Never walk right in front of someone who is praying.
Put rubbish in the bin, put the Qur'ans back on the shelf and leave the masjid tidy for everyone.
Step out with your left foot first and say:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ
allāhumma innī asʾaluka min faḍlik
Source: Sahih Muslim 713
Tip for parents: read one lesson together, then practise it, for example wudu before prayer.
